During a Flood

Safety tips to protect you and your family

When a flood strikes, your top priority is keeping you and your loved ones safe. Floodwaters can rise quickly and unpredictably, so act fast and follow these key safety tips.

1. Avoid Floodwater at All Costs

Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and two feet of water can carry away a vehicle. Always find a safe, alternative route if you encounter water.

2. Keep Children and Pets Safe

Floodwater may be contaminated with sewage, hazardous chemicals, or dangerous debris. Make sure children and pets stay away from all floodwater.

3. Follow Evacuation Orders

If authorities instruct you to evacuate, do so immediately.

Do not delay or attempt to wait out the flood. If you stay in your home, move to higher ground and remain there until emergency services confirm it’s safe to leave. Local councils will assist with temporary accommodation if needed.
