Before a Flood
How to Prepare and Stay Safe
Preparation is crucial for minimising flood damage and keeping your loved ones safe. Here’s how to get ready.
1. Prepare an Emergency Bag
Assemble an emergency kit with essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, medications, first aid supplies, and important documents such as insurance policies and identification.
Don’t forget practical items like flashlights, batteries, a portable phone charger, warm clothing, and basic hygiene products. This emergency bag will be critical if you need to evacuate or if basic utilities become unavailable.
2. Make a Flood Action Plan
Create a flood action plan detailing how you will respond in case of a flood on the Resilico connect app.
Identify a safe evacuation route and establish a meeting point for your family in case of separation. Ensure everyone knows how to communicate and what to do, including plans for pets, elderly relatives, or anyone with special needs. Practice your plan regularly to ensure everyone is prepared.
3. Stay Informed About Flood Warnings
Make sure you have access to information to stay updated on flood or rainfall warnings. Resilico Connect provides rainfall information from the Met Office and any flood alerts issues by environment agencies. Being informed early will give you valuable time to take action and protect your family and property.
4. Flood-Proof Your Home
Take preventive measures to make your home more flood-resistant. Raise electrical appliances and utilities above ground level, waterproof basement walls, and install property flood resilience measures.
Clear gutters and drains to reduce water buildup. If flooding is imminent and you don’t have any installed products, consider temporary flood barriers and the use of aluminium or duct tape to help keep water out.
