After a Flood

Steps to help recover from a flood

Once the floodwaters have receded, it’s crucial to take careful and deliberate steps to ensure your safety and begin the recovery process. Returning home too soon or without proper precautions can expose you to dangerous conditions. Here’s how to approach the situation. Although this list is not exhaustive, it will help to understand what you need to consider.

1. Wait for Official Clearance

Only return to your property once authorities have declared the area safe. Flood-damaged areas can have hidden dangers, such as weakened structures, contaminated water, or hazardous debris.

2. Check for Hazards Before Entering

Inspect your home carefully. Do not use gas or electrical appliances until a professional has checked them for safety.
If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, leave immediately and call emergency services. Be cautious of mold, which can develop within 24 hours of flooding.

3. Report Flood Damage
to Your Insurance

Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the damage. Your insurer will need to assess the damage and guide you through the claims and repair process.
Take photos of everything that is damaged - furniture, carpets, curtains, possessions and external damage. Take a photo of the tide mark on the wall where the flood water reached. Resilico Connect let’s you take photos and add notes so that everything is documented.

4. Clean Up Safely

Wear protective gear, such as gloves and masks, during cleanup. Open windows to ventilate your home and help it dry out. Disinfect all surfaces thoroughly, and be aware of potential contamination from floodwater or mud. Follow local authority guidance on waste disposal and structural safety to prevent further damage or health risks.
